A Father’s Legacy
The John Atkinson Lung Cancer Foundation, named for John Atkinson, a nonsmoking father of three and devoted husband who died of lung cancer in June of 2009 at the age of 40, strives to be recognized as a leading advocate on the issue in Nebraska and across the country. While John was still with us, his story was broadcast on The Today Show and NBC Nightly News and also published in Golf Digest and Golf World as well as many other newspapers around the world. John also became widely recognized when he was selected by Golf Digest to be the first person to play in the US Open Challenge at Torrey Pines on NBC with Matt Lauer, Justin Timberlake and Tony Romo.
John and his family began pursuing the vision of this foundation during his the last year of his battle against lung cancer. John felt like he was given an opportunity to help raise awareness about this awful disease, as well as educate people that ANYBODY can get lung cancer, even non-smokers! Per John's wishes, The John Atkinson Lung Cancer Foundation will create linkages with schools, partner organizations, community members and public officials to reach our goals.
- Goal 1: To provide scholarships to students who have lost a parent to lung cancer.
- Goal 2: To increase awareness of lung cancer in order to prevent the disease.
- Goal 3: To advocate for increased funding for lung cancer research.
John handed the torch to his family. Through vision and determination, the work continues to give hope to an entire nation’s legacy and dreams in the battle to end lung cancer.
